TaraTarini Hill Shrine (www.taratarini.nic.in) near Berhampur city in Orissa is a famous Shakti shrine and is one among the four major dhams of shakti worship in India. The orgin of this Breast Shrine, Popularly known as KALYAN DHAM, from the limbs of Mata Sati and the presene of pious river Rushikulya (considered as the elder sister of Ganga) makes this a major destination of Hindu religion.

TaraTarini was the Istadevi of the mighty Kalinga empire and the capital of ancient kalinga "SAMAPA" and the present "JAUGADA" was at a distance of 5 kms from this famous hill shrine. As Kalinga adopted Buddhism after getting defeated at the hands of Magadha, the presiding diety of the empire fell into the hands of Buddhist Sadhakas and Tantriks.

Jagadguru Shankaracharya discovered the Hindu roots of this Shrine and its ancient tradition of Shakti worship and freeded it from Budhist influence. Tara upashana in Buddhism has its origins from TaraTarini Shrine, as Buddhists were never known to be worshippers of the mother Goddess prior to this. Taratarini Hill shrine stands as a symbol of Hindu religion and Shakti cult. A place which every Hindu believer of Shakti and worshipper Mother Goddes visits once during its lifetime.
